Having lifted the Indian Premier League title with Sunrisers Hyderabad, Australia’s esteemed Tom Moody returns to the league for the first time since 2022 as he steps in as the Lucknow Super Giants’ Global Director of Cricket.

In this role, Tom Moody will oversee LSG’s cricketing operations across all associated franchises: Durban’s Super Giants in the SA20, and the Manchester-based Super Giants team in The Hundred.

He will work in close co-ordination with his former Australia teammate Justin Langer, who retains his position as head coach, and Kane Williamson, who has been appointed strategic advisor for the franchise.

Extensive Coaching by Tom Moody

In October of this year, the 60-year-old Moody is one of the game’s most respected and accomplished cricket coaches around the globe, with a wealth of more than twenty years in the sport at the franchise and international levels.

In early 2025, Moody guided the Oval Invincibles to their third successive Hundred title in three years, cementing his status as one of the most respected minds in modern cricket.

In addition to being in England, Moody was also the head coach of Desert Vipers in the ILT20, leading the franchise to the runners-up position in 2023 and a second time in 2025.

He has become one of the most sought-after names in franchise cricket because of his ability to develop winning cultures and support new talent.

Moody Chooses LSG Over Oval Invincibles Extension

Reports indicate that both the Surrey County Cricket Club and Reliance Industries Limited (which owns the Mumbai Indians as well as acquired a 49% stake in Oval Invincibles earlier this year) both wanted to retain Moody for another period. But Moody has opted to join LSG rather than stay put, as LSG has afforded him an elevated and more significant role managing multiple teams within the Super Giants group of teams.

While an official announcement is awaited from the RP Sanjiv Goenka Group, which owns the franchise based in Lucknow, details about Moody’s contract tenure have not been disclosed.

Return to the IPL: A Familiar Role for Moody

The appointment of Moody signals a return to the IPL for him after he parted ways with Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2022. He remains one of the most iconic former coaches at SRH, under whom the side first lifted the IPL title back in 2016 and finished multiple playoff seasons from 2013 to 2019 inclusive. Later, he was engaged as Director of Cricket in 2021 before being elevated to Head Coach this season in 2022.

At LSG, Moody takes over from Zaheer Khan, who was the franchise’s Global Head of Cricket Development during IPL 2025. Zaheer was signed for two years but his association with the team ended after one season in September.

LSG’s Recent IPL Performance and Challenges

Lucknow Super Giants, who had promising inaugural seasons reaching the playoffs in both 2022 and 2023, have not been very consistent over the years. They finished seventh in IPL 2025 with only six wins from 14 matches.

The title-winning campaign was quite one of two halves: five wins in the first eight matches and then a sharp decline with just one victory in the remaining six. LSG too had a dismal run at the home ground, Ekana Stadium, winning only two out of seven matches.

With Tom Moody coming into the setup alongside Justin Langer and Kane Williamson, the franchise hopes to gain back that winning momentum before IPL 2026 and further make strides in its global cricket footprint.
