A Detailed View

The International Premier League (IPL) is the most followed cricket championship in the world, and in 2014, it had the sixth-highest average attendance of all sports leagues. In 2010, the IPL made history by being the first athletic event ever to have a live YouTube broadcast. The IPL has a brand value of 90,038 crores (US$11 billion) in 2022.  The BCCI estimates that the 2015 IPL season increased India’s GDP by 1,150 crores ($140 million).

There have been fifteen seasons of the IPL competition. The current IPL champion franchise is Gujarat Titans, who claimed victories in both their first campaign and the 2022 campaign. Zee Entertainment Enterprises funded the establishment of the Indian Cricket League (ICL) in 2007. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the International Cricket Council (ICC) both refused to acknowledge the ICL, and the BCCI was not pleased that some of its committee members had been elected to the ICL executive board. The BCCI boosted the prize money for their domestic competitions to deter players from joining the ICL, which the body viewed as a breakaway league, and enforced lifetime bans on those who did.

Background

The BCCI introduced the Indian Premier League, a game series Twenty20 cricket league, on September 13 in response to India’s triumph at the 2007 T20 World Cup. A “high-profile ceremony” in New Delhi in April 2008 was planned to mark the beginning of the first season. Lalit Modi, a vice-president of the BCCI, spearheaded the IPL effort and provided details on the format, winnings, franchise revenue model, and squad composition rules. The top two clubs in the IPL would qualify for that year’s Champions League Twenty20, and the IPL would be governed by a seven-member board made up of former India players and BCCI executives.

To select the league’s owners, a bidding was held on January 24, 2008. The basic values for the teams were about $400 million. The winning bidders and the locations where the teams will be based were revealed after the auction: Chennai, Mohali, Bangalore, Delhi, Jaipur, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Mumbai. In the end, $723.59 million was paid for all the franchises. In 2008, the Indian Cricket League quickly disbanded.
