PAK vs ZIM: Pakistan’s cricket team finds itself under severe criticism once again as it left the first game of their White Ball Series against Zimbabwe in a heap, in defeat by 80 runs in the DLS (Duckworth-Lewis-Stern) method. Zimbabwe won this match played at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo on Sunday, 24 November. This loss has rendered the cricketing world shame-faced with Pakistan’s performance. Fans and pundits alike have expressed their disappointment with the latest performance of the team.

Pakistan’s captain and wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan won the toss and decided to bowl first to start the match. The choice went well for the first few overs but Zimbabwe played by Richard Ngarwa and Sikandar Raza put together a competitive total which had a series of setbacks in the early overs. Zimbabwe finally lost all its wickets to get bowled out for 205 runs in 40.2 overs.

Ngarwa scored the most for Zimbabwe with a steady 48 runs, while Raza chipped in with a valuable 39 runs. Other than these two, no Zimbabwean batsman could go on to make a huge impact as the rest of the team folded under pressure. For Pakistan, the bowlers did have some early inroads, with Agha Salman and Faisal Akram taking three wickets each, being the pick of the bowlers with the ball.

Amer Jamal Mohammad Hasnain, and also Haris Rauf picked up one wicket each, and the bowling effort at that stage was relatively disciplined from the visitors.

Pakistan chased a small target of 206 runs. Things didn’t get much better for Pakistan since they lost a wicket within three overs from the start of the chase. Abdullah Shafiq, who had been expected to anchor the innings, fell for just 1 run, leaving the team on the back foot. The situation worsened quickly for Pakistan, as wickets continued to fall at regular intervals. By the time rain interrupted play, Pakistan had lost 6 wickets for a mere 60 runs in 21 overs, putting them in a dire position.

The match was decided based on the DLS method as rain delayed, which calculated Pakistan’s target and finally handed a defeat by 80 runs to them. Such a crucial match collapse in batting for Pakistan has left cricket analysts quite sharp on criticism, mentioning how not much resilience was seen and the decision made during such pressures was quite poor.

This win brings Zimbabwe to a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series, which is no small feat after all that they have faced. It’s a massive fillip for Zimbabwean cricketing morale, while it would be a huge setback for Pakistan, which would have to bounce back strongly in the remainder of the two matches. On 26 November, it will play the second ODI at the same venue, Queens Sports Club, in a hoping attempt to level the series and restore the honor for Pakistan.

Pakistan’s Criticism after defeat in PAK vs ZIM

In the aftermath of this loss, Pakistan has generally been under fire, specifically regarding their batting, which seems to have collapsed, thereby raising questions about the team’s strategy regarding limited-overs cricket. Despite a good bowling effort, Pakistan is not able to chase down a relatively small target, leaving fans and analysts bewildered. The defeat is perceived as a blow to the team, which many envisaged would convincingly win the series against a much lower-ranked Zimbabwean side.

The Pakistan coaching staff and the players will have to introspect into the reasons behind this disappointment and better themselves in the remaining matches. Pakistan has a cue and that is the second ODI: they must recover and play better all-round cricket to avoid the Zimbabwean series.

The Zimbabwe-Pakistan series is all set to be an interesting contest, as the next match will be decisive for Pakistan to gather some success from this series. The pressure now would lie on the visiting team to regroup and do much better in the second ODI.
