Usman Khawaja has confirmed that the ongoing fifth Ashes Test series against England at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) will be the concluding match of his international career as the left-handed batsman has retired from international cricket. The ongoing match will be the 88th and final appearance of Khwaja with the Australia team.

Final farewell at the venue where it all began

Usman Khawaja, aged 39, told his teammates about the decision on Friday morning. His debut in Test cricket came back in 2011 at the SCG when a injury to Ricky Ponting presented him with the opportunity to debut for the first time. Over the past 15 years, Khwaja has managed to amass more than 6,000 test runs for Aussie.

An Emotional Retirement Announcement

In a passionate speech, Khwaja remembered his childhood days spent around SCG, where he had dreamt of becoming a Test cricketer himself someday. Khwaja remembered his humble background, his parents, and how cricket changed his life.

“I am here today to announce that I am going to retire from international cricket post the SCG Test match,” he announced while expressing his thanks and his peace of mind as he was leaving this game behind.

Breaking Barriers and Making History

Usman Khawaja: Usman Khawaja was born in Pakistan and raised in Australia. He created history by being the first Pakistani and the first Muslim cricketer to play for Australia in test matches.

He was also known for his technically sound play and his impressive cut and pull shot. He proudly accepted his identity and experience, emphasizing the importance of representation and hard work in cricket in Australia.

Domestic Revival and Leadership Success

Yet after his unpredictable start to international cricket, Khwaja rebuilt himself after joining Queensland from New South Wales in 2012. It was amazing how Khwaja went from almost being forgotten domestically:

  • Captained Queensland to the Sheffield Shield title (2020-21)
  • Scored 15,000+ first-class runs
  • Re-established himself as a world-class Test opener

Ashes Comeback and Peak Years

The career-turning point of Khwaja came in the 2021-22 Ashes series, where he scored consecutive centuries at the SCG. He further continued scoring heavily in Pakistan and England. He was the top run-scorer in the 2023 Ashes series, helping Australia retain the urn.

In 2023, Usman Khwaja reached the pinnacle of his career achievements:

  • ICC Test Cricketer of the Year
  • Shane Warne Test Cricketer of the Year
  • Key contributor to Australia’s World Test Championship victory
