There’s something about this fixture that just refuses to be ordinary. Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) both five-time IPL champions locked horns at Wankhede Stadium tonight in Match 33 of IPL 2026. And while the big names of Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni were absent, one man made absolutely sure nobody missed them.

Sanju Samson. The man put on an absolute clinic.

The Toss and Context: Two Giants in Crisis

MI skipper Hardik Pandya won the toss and elected to field first. It looked like a smart call on paper. Wankhede has been a ground where dew and a flat surface have favored chasing sides. But nobody factored in what Samson had planned for the evening.

Both sides came into this match having won just two of their six games, identical, disappointing starts for two franchises used to battling it out at the top of the table. MI heads into the clash fresh from a commanding 99-run win over Gujarat Titans, with Jasprit Bumrah back in rhythm and Tilak Varma boosting the middle order with a stunning century. CSK, on the other hand, had bounced back from three straight losses with two consecutive wins, only to stumble against Sunrisers Hyderabad in their last outing.

Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni continued to remain sidelined two iconic absences that cast a long shadow over the atmosphere at Wankhede. Fans in yellow, many wearing the number ‘7’ on their backs, still showed up in full voice, hoping for a miracle appearance from their idol. It never came. But Samson gave them something to cheer for instead.

The Powerplay: CSK Come Out Swinging

CSK didn’t take long to set the tone. They racked up 73 runs in the powerplay their second-highest against MI in the IPL. The only time they’ve scored more in the powerplay against Mumbai was way back in 2015, when Brendon McCullum and Dwayne Smith were tearing attacks apart.

MI was so concerned that they brought Bumrah back for a second spell in the powerplay something you rarely see. That tells you how desperate they were to pull things back. But CSK were in no mood to slow down.

Gaikwad Falls, But Samson Stands Tall

Krish Bhagat picked up the big wicket of CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Sarfaraz Khan also walked back to the pavilion. Gaikwad fell for 22, playing an attacking stroke aggressive intent, but another low score for the CSK captain who has been struggling to convert starts this season.

But then there was Samson. Cool. Composed. Inevitable.

Sarfaraz Khan made his presence felt briefly hitting the very first ball he faced from Bumrah for a six over his head but it wasn’t enough to anchor the innings. Shivam Dube came and went. Dewald Brevis added some fireworks before Ashwani Kumar got rid of Brevis for 21 to leave CSK at 122/4.

Samson’s Masterclass: The Innings That Won the Night

With CSK needing someone to take ownership, Samson did what he’s been doing all IPL 2026 carry his team on his back. He manipulated the field, rotated the strike, and then absolutely exploded in the death overs.

Sanju Samson struck his second century of IPL 2026 and fifth overall, guiding CSK past the 200-run mark in the final stages of the innings. The Wankhede crowd even the ones in blue couldn’t help but applaud.

Jamie Overton chipped in with a lusty cameo at the end before being caught by Naman Dhir after mistiming a big shot, but by then the damage was done.

CSK finish: 207/6 in 20 overs. Target for MI: 208
