Ambati Rayudu, a former cricketer from India, has now taken an important administrative position as the Director of Cricket Operations for Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA). His appointment signals a new chapter in his cricketing career, moving from playing within the game to helping create its future in Hyderabad & Telangana via administration.

Rayudu’s Vision for Hyderabad Cricket

Ambati Rayudu was resolute in his message of optimism for what he plans to accomplish, to “take care of some housekeeping” as well as focusing on the development of local cricketers.

The main objective that Rayudu envisions is to provide an opportunity for cricketers from Hyderabad and Telangana, who have an abundance of cricketing talent, to achieve their ultimate goal of playing for India at the highest level.

A Three-Year Tenure Begins

Starting now, Rayudu has accepted a three-year appointment as HCA’s Head of Cricket Operations. In this position, he has the capability to create and develop changes related to Cricket in this region, including scouting players, selecting teams, and all cricket-related facilities.

Background: Past Controversies with HCA

This appointment is very significant due to Rajyud’s past with HCA, where he publicly expressed issues regarding the alleged corruption and political influence of selections in relation to teams in 2019. There were several events that led to him leaving the Hyderabad cricket association after the 2019/20 domestic season.

Domestic Career Journey

The following table displays the different Phases of Ambati Rayudu’s connections with Hyderabad Cricket:

  • Began his career at 16 years old during the 2001-02 season
  • Moved briefly to represent Andhra in the 2005-06 season
  • Returned to represent Hyderabad from 2006 until 2010
  • Most recently represented Hyderabad from 2017 until 2020.
  • He also played for Andhra and Baroda and has demonstrated that he is a capable and experienced player across different teams within the domestic circuit.

International and IPL Achievements

Rayudu had a great career in cricket:

  • He played in 55 One Day Internationals (ODIs) and 6 T20 Internationals with India
  • He played 97 matches in first-class cricket
  • He won 6 IPL championships (3 with each team) with the Mumbai Indians as well as the Chennai Super Kings

After retiring from Indian cricket, he will continue his career by playing in several international leagues including the Caribbean Premier League during the years of 2023 and 2024 and the ILT20.

The appointment of Rayudu could mean change for the Hyderabad Cricket Association as he has direct experience of the issues within the system, and his insight makes him ready to foster transparency, accountability and a renewed emphasis on the development of the grassroots level of cricket.
