BBL 2024: Sixers Maintains Their Unbeaten Streak
Sydney Sixers remain undefeated in BBL after thrashing Brisbane Heat.

The Sydney Sixers continued their perfect run in the (BBL) Big Bash League 2023-24 season by defeating Brisbane Heat comprehensively by eight wickets. The win came in front of a sell-out crowd at the Gabba as the Sixers dominated their opponents in all aspects of the game, carrying their impressive run after four games in the competition.
Brisbane Heat Restricted to a Modest Total

Brisbane Heat were sent in to bat first after losing the toss and their batting woes were well on display from the outset. The Sixers’ bowlers, led by the in-form Ben Dwarshuis, kept the hosts on a tight leash throughout their innings. A spirited start from the opening batsman of Heat, Tom Banton, who hit an audacious reverse sweep for six off the second ball of the match, could not stop the Sixers’ bowlers from maintaining pressure consistently.
The Heat’s batsmen could not find any significant partnerships and only Nathan McSweeney (34 off 29 balls) put up some resistance. Other than McSweeney, there was little to cheer for the Heat as they finished at a below-par total of 9-138. This was a disappointing total, especially considering that they were playing at home and with a sell-out crowd behind them.
Dwarshuis was the pick of the bowlers with the ball, taking outstanding figures of 4-32. He has been in sensational form this season, and his efforts made him the leading wicket-taker in this year’s BBL, with 10 wickets to his name. Dwarshuis came close to a hat-trick in the final over, with Matthew Kuhnemann edging a sharp return catch, only for the ball to burst through his outstretched hands.
Josh Philippe and Kurtis Patterson Guide Sixers to Easy Win

The Sixers’ chase of 139 was clinical with openers Josh Philippe and Kurtis Patterson making light work of the modest target. Philippe was outstanding, remaining unbeaten on 66 from 45 balls. His innings were the cornerstone of the chase and he brought up his 17th BBL half-century in style. Philippe’s composed approach and ability to dominate the bowlers ensured that the Sixers reached their target comfortably in the 17th over.
Patterson at No. 3 did the bulk of the job by a breezy 32 off 20 balls, as the batting went totally dominant against Brisbane and was not able to offer much of a contest by the bowlers of Heat, who gave away short lengths and gave the Sixers ease.
The winning knock that sealed the deal for Philippe was also key, but the captain of the team, Moises Henriques, did his bit pretty well as he remained unbeaten with 29, helping the team reach the finish line like a breeze. It added Henriques to an exclusive list as he became the fourth player in BBL history to join 3,000s.
Ben Dwarshuis: Glamour of the Ball – Post-Victory
Ben Dwarshuis was deservedly named the Player of the Match for his outstanding bowling performance. After the match, Dwarshuis spoke about how the win was another step towards the Sixers’ ultimate goal of claiming the BBL title, especially after their heartbreak in last year’s final against the Heat.
“It doesn’t quite get revenge for what happened last year, but we are a step closer to getting into the final and going a step further this year,” said Dwarshuis. He praised the team’s overall contribution and mentioned that the batting and bowling units had clicked in unison.
“Josh (Philippe) is in great touch and it makes a big difference when guys at the top of the order are scoring runs. We are building pressure throughout the innings with the ball,” Dwarshuis added. “All the bowlers are doing their job, and I am the one getting the wickets for now. It’s nice to be getting the accolades.”
Heat’s Fielding Woes Continue in BBL
While the Sixers were flawless in the field, with Jordan Silk pulling off some stunning catches, the Heat’s fielding was far from top-notch. In one particularly embarrassing moment, Philippe skied a delivery early in his innings, and the ball appeared to bounce between Brisbane fielders Colin Munro and Paul Walter, who were left looking at each other in confusion. This mishap epitomized the Heat’s struggles in the field.

The fielding woes were compounded when Jordan Silk, with his athletic brilliance, took two brilliant catches in the outfield. The first was a sensational diving effort to dismiss Colin Munro, who had struggled again with the bat, and the second was an even more remarkable catch to dismiss Jimmy Peirson (24). Silk sprinted and dived full length, plucking the ball from just inches above the ground, leaving spectators in awe.
Heat’s Batting Woes Continue

Brisbane’s batting once again failed to deliver, with their captain Colin Munro continuing his poor run of form. Munro, who has yet to reach double figures in this year’s BBL campaign, was dismissed for just 9 off 17 balls. The Heat struggled to get partnerships going and were never able to accelerate their innings, with McSweeney’s 34 being the only score of substance.
Despite early fireworks from Banton and a couple of decent contributions, the Heat’s batting lineup came up short against the quality of the Sixers’ attack, which has been in great form.
Sixers Take Command of the BBL Standings
The commanding win meant the Sydney Sixers extended their unbeaten run to four matches, taking them to the top of the BBL standings with eight points. They are now four points ahead of the Brisbane Heat who lost two in a row, and that strong start seems to place them well in contention to win the BBL title, given that they have been collecting momentum throughout the season.
However, it was a different story for Heat as they will have to reorganize in the least amount of time possible as this successive defeat has created doubts about consistency and winning performance.
This match for Brisbane Heat needs their fielding and batting very seriously if they want to turn out strongly at BBL this season.
Dominating Performance by the Sixers in BBL
The Sydney Sixers defeated Brisbane Heat comprehensively with an eight-wicket victory, which is domination of all aspects of play. From Ben Dwarshuis’ exquisite bowling to the composed batting of Josh Philippe, the Sixers were completely in the driver’s seat. With the unbeaten start to the season, the Sixers look as formidable and have a good team loaded with match-winner kinds of players. For Brisbane, there’s plenty to work on, and they will need to improve their batting and fielding to bounce back in the next few games.
