BCCI announced partnership with Adidas as kit sponsor

Jay Shah announced on Monday that the BCCI and sportswear giant Adidas has entered a new contract for the Indian Cricket Team kit sponsorship.

BCCI on the 22nd of May announced Adidas as the new kit sponsor for the Indian cricket team. Starting in the next month, the India Cricket Team’s uniforms will be sponsored by the global sportswear brand Adidas. The Indian team will wear Adidas uniforms for the World Test Championship Final 2023 (WTC Final 2023), which gets underway on June 7 at Kennington Oval in London.

Although particular financial information and the length of the sponsorship arrangement were not made public, this move represents a key turning point for Adidas and the Indian cricket team’s relationship.

The highly anticipated partnership had been the subject of rumours in the Indian media before BCCI Secretary Jay Shah announced it on Twitter.

In 2020 when the contract between BCCI and Nike ended then the apex cricket board went with the young brand MPL Sports. MPL Sports is the merchandise hand of the Mobile Premier League. The deal with MPL Sports was supposed to end in December 2023 but ended prematurely. Clothing brand Killer Jeans was roped in as the interim kit sponsor by BCCI. MPL Sports in 2022 itself started founding replacements as they found it difficult to handle the financials of their deal. MPLL Sports was supposed to be paying BCCI a base amount of INR 3 crores every year as well as INR 65 Lakhs per match. The contract of BCCI with Killer Jeans is scheduled to be ending on May 31st.

The move for getting Adidas was met with great positive reactions from fans of the Indian cricket team as well as former players. In response to Jay Shah’s tweet, former Indian cricketer, Laxman Sivaramakrishnan expressed his joy with BCCI and Adidas getting into a contract. Laxman shared a story of his 1st foreign pair of shoes which were also Adidas.
