Former Pakistan player slammed the Pakistan cricket team as Kamran Akmal recently expressed his opinions on left-arm speedster Mohammad Amir’s comeback to the nation’s cricket squad and suggested that the selection panel should give youngsters higher priority than the seasoned bowler.
Amir should undoubtedly receive an opportunity to play for the country, according to Akmal. However, the 41-year-old believes that the board should give priority to young players who are competing in domestic competitions and reward them for their grit.
The wicket-keeper batsman said, “We should definitely consider Amir.” Akmal believes that there is nothing wrong in considering Amir. He further said, “Amir plays domestic cricket. Selection shouldn’t be solely based on PSL.” Akmal argued that the selection panel or the board should first pay attention to the youngsters who are actively part of first-class cricket.
The former wicket keeper even further criticized the Pakistan team and said that they should be grateful they are not playing qualifiers for the 2023 ODI World Cup scheduled in October and November later this year. Akmal believes as Sri Lanka, West Indies and South Africa are playing qualifiers and if they are able to better their performances then it will eventually cost Pakistan in the long run in the 2027 ODI World Cup.
The former wicket-keeper batsman continued to criticize the current Pakistani side, saying that they have to at least perform to the standard that their seniors have set and not degrade cricket’s caliber.
He criticized the selection team and said the playing 11 should not be selected based on their biases towards any player. These selections in his opinion cost Pakistan matches. The team was also warned by Akmal that other teams had begun to take them for granted and that they needed to step up their game before it was too late.
He believes that other nations take them for granted as players from different nations prioritize the Indian Premier League over playing against the Pakistan team. In 2021, when Pakistan toured South Africa, some players from the South African team had left to play the IPL. This year when South Africa played Netherlands the players missed a few of the IPL games.
