Max Verstappen has openly spoken out about being frustrated by Formula 1 in general, and heading into 2026, has indicated that his dissatisfaction stems from rules that he believes will have a negative impact on Formula 1’s future.
However, Helmut Marko does not necessarily agree with Max Verstappen’s argument. In Helmut Marko’s opinion, there are other factors affecting Max Verstappen besides the rules, and these factors revolve around performance rather than regulations.
Max Verstappen hasn’t held back in recent weeks. He’s openly criticised the upcoming regulations, calling them “anti-racing” and even comparing them to “Formula E on steroids.” At one point, he hinted he could walk away from the sport altogether if things don’t improve.
What’s interesting is that the four-time world champion has also said he wouldn’t mind finishing seventh or eighth, as long as the racing itself is enjoyable.
That’s where Helmut Marko’s perspective starts to differ.
Helmut Marko Points to Red Bull’s Struggles
For Helmut Marko, the issue isn’t just about what’s coming in 2026. It’s about what’s happening right now.
Red Bull Racing has had a rough start to the season. After three rounds, the team sits sixth in the constructors’ standings with just 16 points, far from its usual dominance.
That dip in performance, according to Helmut Marko, is playing a big role in Verstappen’s current mood.
He said, “Red Bull has identified some problems with the car and found solutions. Once the car is competitive again, Max’s enjoyment will return, and his mood will improve.”
“This will be especially true if they consider some changes to the regulations for 2027, because it’s clear to everyone, not just Max, that there needs to be more racing than economy runs.”
Can Red Bull Turn It Around?
There’s some optimism inside the team. Red Bull is working on upgrades, including its own version of Ferrari’s so-called “Macarena” wing, aimed at improving performance.
But they’re not alone.
McLaren is reportedly bringing a heavily revised car, while Ferrari is expected to introduce a major update package.
Mercedes Still Leading the Pack
Even with upgrades coming across the grid, Helmut Marko isn’t convinced the title fight is about to reset.
He said, “I don’t think so, Mercedes is far too settled; they have a great chassis, a powerful engine, and haven’t shown everything yet, they certainly still have an ace up their sleeve. For me, Kimi Antonelli and George Russell remain the big favourites.”
Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team has looked strong early on, and Helmut Marko believes that stability could keep them ahead, at least for now.
