In a remarkable turn of events, Team India achieved a historic milestone in cricket rankings after securing the No.1 spot in the Men’s ODI Team Rankings following their impressive victory against Australia. This accomplishment adds to India’s growing momentum as they prepare to host the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 on their home turf.
India, with an impressive 116 rating points, dethroned their arch-rivals Pakistan (115 rating points) to claim the pinnacle of the rankings. Australia, while remaining in third place, saw the gap between the top two widen as their rating points dropped to 111.
This victory marks India’s dominance across all formats, as they already held the No.1 position in Test and T20I rankings. The first ODI against Australia witnessed India’s ascent to the top, as they clinched a convincing five-wicket win. Mohammed Shami’s exceptional five-wicket haul shone in India’s bowling performance, guided by stand-in captain KL Rahul’s decision to field first.

In response, Shubman Gill and Ruturaj Gaikwad each contributed a half-century and formed a formidable 142-run opening partnership. Despite some hiccups in the middle overs, half-centuries from Rahul and Surykumar Yadav ensured India’s victory.
The race for the No.1 spot in the ODI Team Rankings had been highly competitive in recent times, with India, Pakistan, and Australia vying for the coveted position during the Asia Cup and Australia’s ODI series against South Africa.
Despite not reaching the Asia Cup Final, Pakistan managed to hold onto their No.1 ranking. Both India and Australia had opportunities to claim the top spot but faltered when it counted.
Following this defeat, Australia’s chances of becoming the No.1 team ahead of the World Cup have diminished. However, Pakistan still has a chance if Australia wins their remaining two matches.
India is now in a commanding position, with the prospect of securing the top spot firmly in their grasp as they head into the prestigious World Cup being hosted in their homeland.

This achievement underscores India’s supremacy across all formats, joining a select group in men’s cricket history. Prior to this, only South Africa had achieved the distinction of being the No.1 team across all formats in August 2012.
In Test cricket, India has demonstrated remarkable consistency, earning a spot in their second consecutive World Test Championship Final in June, albeit falling short of victory. Their record in bilateral series is nearly impeccable, with a solitary series loss against South Africa in 2021-22.
In the T20I arena, India reached the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup in 2022. Their performance in bilateral T20I series is even more impressive, with just one series loss out of 14 since the 2021 T20 World Cup.
