India have officially announced the squad of India for T20 World Cup 2026, which has already led to huge controversy. Vice-captain Shubman Gill has been dropped, but there are big comebacks by Rinku Singh and Ishan Kishan. Axar Patel has been named the vice-captain of the team.
Why Shubman Gill was Not Selected in India’s Squad for T20 WC 2026 – Explained
The move to leave out Shubman Gill was not related to his performance but was only a team selection combination move. Ajit Agarkar, the chief selector, said that the team management wanted to have the wicketkeeper-batter open the innings, hence leaving out Gill.
Gill has scored 291 in 15 innings in T20Is with a strike-rate of 137.26, without hitting a single fifty. But coming from the selectors and the skipper, the need for a decent season of cricket did matter.
Ishan Kishan’s Return Adds Strength to the Top Order
Ishan Kishan, who is also a wicketkeeper-batter, got inched back into the squad based on his phenomenonal performance in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in which he scored a tale-leading number of 517 runs at an average strike rate of almost 200.
The addition of Ishan Kishan will help increase combinational mobility in both opening as well as middle-order slots in India’s squad competing in World Cup TI C20 in 2026.
Rinku Singh Back, Jitesh Sharma Misses Out
The addition of Rinku Singh, known for his finishing skills, was not without consequence. Jitesh Sharma, who was the regular Indian wicketkeeper in the latest T20 Internationals, was left out. The need for powerful batsmen and bowlers was given utmost importance over having depth in the team.
Axar Patel to be vice-captain
With Gill being absent, Axar Patel has been elevated to the role of vice-captain. With his all-round capabilities, composure, and constant performances with and without the ball, Axar has been the obvious choice for leading the Indian team for T20 World Cup 2026.
