James Foster has been appointed as the new CSK Fielding Coach for the IPL 2026 season. Five-time IPL champions Chennai Super Kings have brought in this former England wicketkeeper to join their coaching team with Head Coach Stephen Fleming as they prepare for the 2026 IPL season. The aim is to enhance the players’ ability in fielding.
James Foster’s International Playing Career
Prior to his career in coaching, James Foster had a distinguished career with England’s national cricket team. James Foster represented England in international cricket between 2001 and 2009 with distinction, earning 23 international caps.
A highly regarded wicketkeeper as well as an astute cricketer, his technical skill provided him with some of the highest levels of technical excellence in English cricket during his playing career.
Coaching Journey in Franchise and International Cricket
James Foster has been coaching since retiring from his playing days (2018). Since then, he has coached numerous teams across many different franchise leagues throughout the world and all levels of men’s international cricket.
One of his major accomplishments was just recently recorded when he guided the Desert Vipers to victory in the International League T20 tournament as the head coach in January 2026.
He was also appointed as the assistant coach for the Birmingham Phoenix in The Hundred tournament, thus broadening his resume in coaching roles. Furthermore, James Foster has had the opportunity to gain valuable experience from working with the coaching staff of both the England and New Zealand national teams.
Previous IPL Experience with Kolkata Knight Riders
This is not the first time that Foster is joining the IPL, as he has earlier served as a fielding coach and an assistant coach for Kolkata Knight Riders. Foster’s past experience in the IPL environment makes him a great addition to the CSK coaching staff, given the increasing competition in the IPL every year.

CSK Looking to Bounce Back in IPL 2026
Following a disappointing IPL 2025 season in which they managed to finish at the very bottom of the table, only winning four matches out of 14 played during the course of the tournament, CSK has appointed a new head fielding coach in James Foster.
Along with a completely different coaching staff and a number of seasoned veterans returning from injury, this should provide a tremendous opportunity for CSK to improve their overall position in the league and contend for the title during IPL 2026.
