Martin Brundle has delivered a blunt reality check to Max Verstappen, warning that an exit from Red Bull Racing may not be as straightforward as it seems.

Despite ongoing speculation around Verstappen’s future, Brundle pointed out that all three leading teams on the grid are already locked into stable and competitive driver line-ups, leaving little room for movement, even for a four-time world champion.

Max Verstappen is often rumoured to be switching teams, and he has been linked with the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team numerous times.

Nevertheless, Valterri Bottas’ replacement, team principal Toto Wolff, has said all along that he is happy with both George Russell and Kimi Antonelli being recent signings from Williams and Sauber and that they will be part of Mercedes’ long-term plans.

The possibility of Max Verstappen moving to McLaren had increased after Gianpiero Lambiase, who is a long-time ally of Verstappen, was tipped for a future role with the McLaren team.

However, CEO Zak Brown is adamant that McLaren will continue to support both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri as they have done all season long in this season’s Constructors’ Championship.

Martin Brundle on Max Verstappen’s options

Martin Brundle didn’t hold back when he was talking about Max Verstappen’s options.

“I’m not sure it’s that easy for Max to just jump ship at the moment,” the former F1 driver said on Sky Sports F1.

“Mercedes has got two homegrown talents in their car, in Russell and Antonelli, and McLaren has set fair with a tremendous lineup that works; it gels very much.”

“Ferrari with Leclerc and Hamilton. So if somebody springs out of one of those cars, then there’s a slot for Max, but the teams can’t if they’re contracted, and won’t want to boot out some great drivers and great driver lineups; and if you’re going to leave Red Bull, for performance only, it’s going to have to be one of those three teams I just mentioned.”

Red Bull’s performance could decide everything

While the door to rival teams appears firmly shut, Martin Brundle suggested Max Verstappen’s decision will ultimately come down to performance- specifically, whether Red Bull can fix its current issues.

Martin Brundle explained, “The power unit has been pretty impressive, actually, so the car itself has been struggling a bit. We’ll see each other again. Red Bull will have some big changes this weekend [at the Miami Grand Prix], so Max will want to see through the midseason that they’re on top of these regulations, they’re on top of the car.”

For now, Max Verstappen remains tied to Red Bull, not just by contract but by circumstance.

With top seats locked and teams unwilling to disrupt winning combinations, even a driver of his calibre may find the market unusually closed.
