In the second ODI at Raipur, India’s total was remarkable and South Africa’s run chase was historic, creating many records. Here are some of the statistical highlights of India’s 358/5 and South Africa’s famous run chase.

Key Stats from IND vs SA 2nd ODI Highlighting Virat Kohli’s Performance

India Post Their Second-Highest ODI Total vs South Africa

358/5 in Raipur is now India’s second-highest ODI score against South Africa, only second to the iconic 401/3 in Gwalior back in 2010.

The 349/8 that they made in Ranchi from the first ODI now sits third on the list.

Kohli-Gaikwad Registered Record Partnership

The 195-run partnership between Virat Kohli and Ruturaj Gaikwad for the third wicket is:

India’s highest partnership for any wicket vs South Africa in men’s ODIs

One run above the previous record of 194 by Sachin Tendulkar and Dinesh Karthik in 2010

Highest third-wicket stand by any team against South Africa in ODIs, beating Kohli-Rahane’s 189 in Durban in 2018

Virat Kohli extends his incredible ODI century streak

With another hundred coming in, Virat Kohli has now recorded 11 instances of back-to-back ODI centuries, the most by any batter in the format. AB de Villiers is a distant second with six such instances.

Gaikwad Smashes 2nd Fastest Indian ODI Hundred vs South Africa

In his 77-ball second-fastest hundred for an Indian batsman against South Africa, Gaikwad achieved his maiden ODI century. Only Yusuf Pathan’s 68-ball blitz in Centurion was faster in 2011. His ton was also the fastest at home by an Indian against South Africa since Sanjay Manjrekar’s 80-ball hundred in 1991.

Kohli Dominates South Africa Like No Other

  • 7 ODI centuries against South Africa: the most by any batter
  • 4 hundreds in his last five home ODIs against them
  • Has now scored ODI tons at 34 different venues, equalling Sachin Tendulkar

Gaikwad Sets Rare List A Record

Before his maiden ODI hundred, Gaikwad had already hit 17 List A hundreds—the most for any player before his first ODI hundred.

Matthew Hayden had held the record with 16.

Kohli Breaks Another Partnership Benchmark

Virat Kohli now has 33 partnerships of 150+ in ODIs the highest by any batter surpassing Tendulkar’s tally of 32. Ruturaj Gaikwad became his 14th different partner in such stands.

Two Indian Centurions in the Same Innings Rare Feat

This game marked only the third time two Indian batters scored centuries in the same ODI innings against South Africa.

Previous Pairs:

Ravi Shastri & Sanjay Manjrekar (1991)

Sachin Tendulkar & Sourav Ganguly (2001)

This was the 44th such instance in ODIs where two Indians scored a century in the same match and the first since Kohli and Shreyas Iyer vs New Zealand in the 2023 World Cup.

South Africa Equal Record for Highest Chase against India

South Africa chased down 359, equalling the highest successful chase against India: Australia had done so in Mohali, 2019.

It also ranks as:

Join 6th highest successful chase in ODI history

Joint 2nd-highest on Indian soil, behind India’s 360 chase vs Australia (2013)

Join Elite 350+ Chase Club – South Africa

This was South Africa’s third successful 350+ ODI chase, putting them alongside India and England with three such run chases each.

Record Aggregate: 720 Runs in One Match

The Raipur thriller produced 720 combined runs, the highest ever in an ODI between India and South Africa. It surpasses the 681-run aggregate from the Ranchi ODI just days before it.

The total of 1401 runs across the two matches makes this the fourth-highest aggregate across the first two games of any bilateral ODI series.
Breetzke Rewrites ODI Debut-era Records

Matthew Breetzke now has: 7 fifty-plus scores in 11 ODI innings most ever at this stage, tied with Sherfane Rutherford 682 runs in first 11 ODIs thus beating Kevin Pietersen’s record 668

Rare Series Trend: Both Teams Scoring 330+ This is only the second ODI series in history where both teams have posted 330+ scores in each of the first two matches.

The previous instance was India vs England in 2017. Markram Continues His ODI Revival Aiden Markram’s century against India was his fourth ODI ton, all scored since the beginning of 2023. Only Quinton de Kock with five has scored more for South Africa in this time. Notably, all hundreds that Markram has scored have come in less than 90 balls and this was his first while chasing.
