A professional sports league is managed by Alpha Entertainment LLC.  The business provides connected services such as games, scores, news, teams, and tickets. Alpha Entertainment conducts business as the XFL.

World Wrestling Entertainment

The XFL will be relaunched in 2020, according to the chairman and CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment, whose investment firm is called Alpha Entertainment. In 2001, McMahon introduced the Xtreme Football League with cheerleaders wearing only their underwear, custom jersey names, and unconventional NFL rules. Nevertheless, the league only lasted one season before folding, despite all the glitz, glamour, and claims of a superior product.

In “late January or early February” of 2020, McMahon’s new XFL will begin to play with eight teams, a 10-game regular season, and “simplified” rules to shorten the game’s duration to around two hours.

On March 20, in the late afternoon, a wave of positivity swept through the XFL’s Stamford, Connecticut, headquarters and its eight local teams. Employees remained optimistic despite that day’s decision to cancel the rest of the season with seven weeks left on the schedule owing to the coronavirus outbreak. Before the pandemic struck, they thought the league was having a successful debut.

The League of Vince McMahon

But in a conference call on April 10, less than three weeks later, the league was shut down, and its approximately 400 staffers were fired. The once-promising XFL 2.0 abruptly came to an end three days later when the league’s parent company filed for bankruptcy. It didn’t even last as long as its infamous forerunner, which made it through an entire season in the early months of 2001.

Within days following Luck and Pollack’s letter announcing the end of the season, sources claimed, alarming symptoms had begun to surface. Vince McMahon, the owner of the league, may have already considered backing out of his $500 million investment based on the subtle changes in management strategy and the lack of communication.

XFL’s Personnel Careers

The XFL’s personnel, whose careers were hitched to its sensational relaunch, continued to work under the illusion that another season would be held in the days that followed. They were aware of the issue because many more well-known sporting properties were eliminating staff and pay, but their directive was to get ready for 2021.

The planning for Season 2’s budget, schedule, and communications didn’t stop. Insiders were unaware of what was going to happen. Some of the eight club presidents in the single-entity league were feverishly ringing around asking for the rumour even on the morning of the tragic conference call that included all league staffers and in which everyone was fired save for a skeleton crew to wind down the league.

The XFL’s Insolvency

Alpha Entertainment, the parent company of the XFL, declared bankruptcy under Chapter 11 on April 13 with assets and liabilities ranging from $10 million to $50 million. It is asking a judge for permission to break hundreds of commitments, including those with coaches, venues, freelance photographers, Luck, Elevate Sports Ventures, and ’47 Brand.

Former league workers and XFL business associates generally have two different perspectives on the quick series of events: They knew the epidemic would put any fledgling sports league to the test, but they also knew the XFL had succeeded in every aspect of its commercial objectives before the crisis. They also trusted in the league’s repeated assurances—made both publicly and privately—that it would run for two seasons, and they took heart from the fact that, as of March 20, the 2020 season had already been postponed and the league wasn’t even spending what it had budgeted.

Two sources claimed that within a week of the season’s termination, directives were sent that team and league social media accounts should solely concentrate on “thank-you messaging” related to previous games. Any messaging referring to upcoming games would be altered; in fact, social media feeds did not contain much information about what would happen after March 20.

The justification offered was that there were simply too many unknowns to make any promises. Even after the pandemic, it was difficult to predict how the XFL would fit into a drastically altered sports calendar. It is because models regarding the severity and duration change daily.
