Jos Buttler: A Perfect Fit For CSK In IPL 2025?

The IPL 2025 retention list brought some surprises, but few were bigger than Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) decision not to retain Jos Buttler, England’s experienced white-ball captain. Despite retaining emerging Indian talent Dhruv Jurel and West Indies power-hitter Shimron Hetmyer, RR chose to release Buttler, which has sparked widespread discussions in cricket circles.

Buttler has been a major player for RR since 2018 and is renowned for his consistency, big runs, and leadership. However, factors like his recent injuries, age (he’s now 34), and his commitments to England, which sometimes conflict with the IPL, may have influenced RR’s decision to move on.

“Thank you to Rajasthan Royals and everyone associated with the franchise for seven incredible seasons. The best years of my cricketing career began in 2018, and my fondest memories in the last six years have come in a pink jersey. Thank you for welcoming me and my family with open arms. With Buttler entering the 2025 auction, he’s likely to draw interest from multiple teams. As the sixth-highest overseas IPL run scorer, he brings valuable skills as both a wicketkeeper and a match-winning batsman. One franchise that stands out as a perfect fit for him is the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Here’s why Buttler could be a game-changer for CSK in the upcoming season.

1. Reliable Backup Wicketkeeper for MS Dhoni

One of CSK’s top priorities in the 2025 auction is finding a dependable wicketkeeper. While MS Dhoni remains CSK’s preferred choice, it’s uncertain whether he’ll play every game next season. Ruturaj Gaikwad, CSK’s captain, can keep part-time but isn’t a full-time wicketkeeper.

Buttler would fit this role perfectly. With his world-class skills both as a keeper and fielder, CSK can rely on him to back up Dhoni while also strengthening their fielding setup. Given that Pant, KL Rahul, and Ishan Kishan are likely to be popular choices at the auction, Buttler could also come at a more affordable price than the top Indian options.

CSK has shown interest in Rishabh Pant, but given their remaining budget of ₹55 crore, Buttler might offer more value without overstretching their finances.

2. Smooth Team Dynamics with Gaikwad as Captain

A significant advantage with Buttler is his comfort in a non-leadership role. CSK recently transitioned from Dhoni to Gaikwad as captain, and having another strong leader might risk disrupting the team’s balance. Players like Pant and Rahul, who have previously led IPL teams, might naturally bring ambitions for leadership, potentially causing friction.

Buttler, on the other hand, has already shown that he can thrive without captaincy. While playing under Sanju Samson at RR, he supported the team without vying for leadership, sharing his experience when needed without competing for control. CSK would benefit from this stability, as Buttler’s experience can reinforce Gaikwad’s leadership without creating tension.

3. Ideal Opening Partner for Ruturaj Gaikwad

Last season, CSK felt the absence of a consistent, high-impact opener. Devon Conway’s injuries created gaps in the lineup, while Rachin Ravindra’s form was inconsistent. With Buttler as an opener, CSK can expect quick starts and consistent big scores, especially on flatter pitches outside of Chennai’s spin-friendly Chepauk.

Buttler’s power-hitting, reflected in his impressive strike rate of 140.19, could bring the firepower CSK missed last season. His experience and aggressive style make him an ideal partner for Gaikwad, as the two could form a reliable opening duo similar to the one Gaikwad shared with Faf du Plessis in the past.

While some teams may see Buttler’s age as a drawback, CSK can leverage it as a sign of experience, especially as he fits well into their strategy of relying on seasoned players. His all-around abilities, combined with his ability to blend into the team structure, make him a valuable prospect for CSK in IPL 2025.
