In a major move after Pakistan’s early exit from the ICC tournament, the PCB imposes a fine of PKR 5 million (approximately USD 18,000) on the Pakistan players after the team fails to qualify for the semi-finals of the ICC men’s tournament for the fourth consecutive time.

This move by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to fine the players is a rare example of a financial fine based on performance rather than misconduct.

Why PCB Fines Pakistan Players – Key Reasons Explained

The fines were said to have resulted from the underwhelming on-field performances of the players during their T20 World Cup tournament. Pakistan was eliminated from the tournament at the Super Eight stage.

This was the fourth consecutive ICC tournament for the men’s national cricket team of Pakistan that saw them fail to make it to the semi-finals. This was the first time in the history of cricket that a nation was witnessing such a situation. This was not a result of any misconduct or disciplinary offenses.

According to reports from ESPNcricinfo, this was communicated immediately after their crushing 61-run loss to India during the group stage of the tournament.

It was reported that the PCB had informed the players that the fines could be remitted if the team made it to the semi-finals, which was not the case.

Pakistan’s T20 World Cup Campaign – What Went Wrong?

Despite this, Pakistan did not suffer a third consecutive first-round exit after making it to the Super Eight stage.

Super Eight Struggles

A washout against New Zealand national cricket team

A defeat to England cricket team

A dominant win by New Zealand over Sri Lanka national cricket team

These results left them relying on other results and a massive win against Sri Lanka to progress, which unfortunately did not prove to be enough for them.

PCB’s Use of Performance-Based Fines Is Unusual

The Pakistan Cricket Board has previously sanctioned players for violating one of their rules, however in this case it is particularly unusual as:

  • There were no issues related to discipline raised by players during the T20 tournament.
  • The fine was purely based on the performance criteria.
  • This action can be considered a strict accountability move by the current PCB management.

Previous Strict Measures by PCB

The PCB has been firm over the last few months regarding the handling of underperforming results at tournaments. In the Asia Cup final between Pakistan and India, which took place earlier this year, Pakistan lost to India by a narrow margin.

As a result, the PCB decided to temporarily halt the issuing of No-Objection Certificates (NOC) to players. This meant that players were temporarily unable to participate in overseas T20 league matches, including the Australian Big Bash League (BBL). The suspension was eventually lifted to enable players to resume competing overseas.

Individual Bright Spot Amid Team Struggles

Despite the team’s overall disappointment, there have been some outstanding performances by the players.

Most notably, Sahibzada Farhan has given a historic performance by:

Breaking the record for the most runs scored in one T20 World Cup tournament.

Becoming the first player in the tournament’s history to have scored two centuries.
