WWE is known for its “masked” wrestlers and the eerie energy that they carry to keep the audience entirely hooked. Over the years, “Unmasking” has constantly been one of the most stirring experiences for hardcore fans in the history of WWE which has never failed to draw in enormous viewership for the platform. The mere thought of getting to know the real identity of their most-liked WWE wrestler often gets the fans full of beans. Well, although a majority of these “unmasking” incidents have been scripted in WWE to a T, a few of them happened unwittingly, being entirely raw and arbitrary. 

In this article, we will take a look at the top five most shocking incidents where the WWE stars were Unmasking “accidentally.”. 

• Rey Mysterio 

Óscar Gutiérrez Rubio, popularly known by his ring name “Rey Mysterio,” has continued to be one of the most rip-roaring and gripping characters behind the mask in the history of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). Hailed by millions of wrestling fans around the world, the mask-man of WWE “Rey Mysterio” was accidentally unmasked during his spine-chilling bout at the WWE SmackDown Live with Andrade and Samoa Joe in 2019. While Rey Mysterio was executing a move against Andrade, the latter unintentionally pulled off his mask, which exposed Rey Mysterio’s face to the audience for a brief second. Although Rey Mysterio quickly pulled down his mask, it was the very first time when the WWE fans got a sneak-peak of his real face and identity.

• Kalisto 

On the second spot on our list of top five most shocking incidents where WWE stars were unmasked “accidentally” we have Mexican-American professional wrestler Emanuel Alejandro Rodriguez, popularly known by his WWE ring name “Kalisto”.  An episode of  WWE Monday Night Raw in 2016 witnessed Alberto Del Rio mercilessly removing Kalisto’s mask during the match, which was broadcast without any edits and received harsh criticism as it was considered to be a major offence in Lucha libre culture. Well, Kalisto gave a befitting reply to Alberto, defeated him and clinched the United States Championship. However, Kalisto’s accidental unmasking by Alberto remains one of the most controversial and shocking unmasking accidents in the hosting of WWE. 

• Kane 

On the third spot on our list of the top five most shocking incidents where WWE stars were unmasked “accidentally,” we have the legendary WWE professional wrestler Glenn Thomas Jacobs, popularly known by his ring name “Kane”. Although forceful unmasking has been a common attack in the history of WWE, no wrestler could pull off Kane’s mask until an episode of WWE Monday Night Raw in 2001, when Kane came to rescue his brother “the Undertaker” in a tag team match against Brian Adams and Bryan Clark when his mask was accidentally pulled off by Bryan Clark while executing a move. Although Kane pulled back his mask in time and his identity didn’t get fully exposed, a couple of years later in 2003, the legendary WWE wrestler was forced to fully take off his mask after he lost the “Mask vs Title” Raw match against Triple H. 

• Gran Metalik 

Mascara Dorada witnessed one of the most controversial and shocking unmasking accidents in the history of World Wrestling Entertainment during his bout with Neville in an episode of WWE 205 Live in 2017. Neville aggressively pulled off Gran Metalik’s mask during the bout, which further intensified the rivalry between the two wrestlers. Gran Metalik who was hailed as one of the most exciting and thrilling masked characters of WWE, was exposed to the audience for the time and the whole incident undoubtedly attracted enormous viewership for the platform. Nonetheless, even after being exposed to his real face and identity, Gran Metalik continued his WWE wrestling career under a mask. 

• Luchasaurus

On the fifth spot on our list of the top five most shocking incidents where the WWE stars were Unmasking “accidentally,” we have Austin Matelson, popularly known by his ring name “Luchasaurus.”.  In a shocking turn of events, Luchasaurus was accidentally unmasked by Jake Hager in 2021 during the AEW Dynamite in a six-man tag team match between The Inner Circle, which featured Sammy Guevara, Chris Jericho, and Jake Hager, and Jurassic Express, which featured Luchasaurus, Christian Cage, and Jungle Boy. 

During his brutal attack against Luchasaurus, Jake Hager accidentally pulled off Luchasaurus’ mask. Although Luchasaurus wasted no time and instantly pulled it back, the whole accident to a certain level exposed Luchasaurus’ real face to the WWE audience and the world.
