On Sunday, 31st October 2021, Afghanistan’s first Test Captain – Asghar Afghan will play his final game against Namibia at the ongoing 2021 T20 World Cup.

Asghar Afghan, the 33-year-old, made his international debut against Scotland in 2009. He has played 6 Test Matches, 114 One-Day Internationals, and 74 T20Is for Afghanistan.

Afghanistan Cricket Board’s Statement

“Afghanistan’s ex-captain Asghar Afghan who holds the highest winning streak as a captain in T20 internationals surpassing Indian legend MS Dhoni by one extra win decides to bid farewell with all formats of cricket in Afghanistan’s third match against Namibia at T20WorldCup,” Afghanistan Cricket Board tweeted.

“@ACBofficials welcomes and respects his decision, expresses gratitude for his services to the country. It will take a lot of hard work for young Afghan cricketers to fill his shoes,” it further added.

However, across formats, so far, he has made 4,215 runs. Asghar Afghan has 42 T20I wins as Captain surpassing MS Dhoni’s 41 wins as captain. He achieved this feat when Afghanistan defeated Zimbabwe in March this year.

In his last test match at Abu Dhabi in March 2021 against Zimbabwe, Asghar Afghan scored 164 Runs, which led to Afghanistan winning the match by six wickets.

In One-Day Internationals, he is ranked 24th in the most consecutive matches as captain of a team with 40 Matches from 16 Oct 2015 – 19 Feb 2018.

Meanwhile, at the 2021 T20 World Cup, Afghanistan is in Group 2 of the Super 12 and currently is in 2nd position after two matches. They have registered a 130 Run win against Scotland but lost to Pakistan by 5 Wickets. The clash against Namibia will be their 3rd Match.
